PALM BEACH SECTION OF NATIONAL COUNCIL OF JEWISH WOMEN OPENS ITS 18TH KIDS COMMUNITY CLOSET
On April 27th, the Palm Beach Section of National Council of Jewish Women opened its 18th Kids Community Closet at Grassy Waters Elementary School in West Palm Beach.
With the opening of this closet, funded by a grant from the Walter and Adi Blum Foundation, the Palm Beach Section of National Council of Jewish Women will be serving over 13,000 students in 17 Palm Beach County elementary schools. An additional closet, which is staffed by the McKinney-Vento office of Safe Schools, serves 3,200 homeless and 800-1,000 foster care youth.
The Kids Community Closet is a secure closet inside selected Title One public elementary schools where more than 90% of the children are living at or below the poverty level. These closets are stocked with new school uniforms (shorts and collared shirts), socks, underwear, belts, and sweatshirts that are distributed by school personnel as the need arises.
The goal of Kids Community Closet is to keep kids in school by providing them with necessary basic clothing items so that they can concentrate on learning and enjoy the self-esteem that comes from looking good and being properly dressed.
